What to check in Malaysian net-nets

Check whether the company carries a distress label. On the Main Market that's PN17, which can be triggered by shareholders' equity falling to 25% or less of share capital and under RM40 million, or by an adverse audit opinion. On the ACE Market the equivalent is GN3. A net-net with either label can be cheap for a reason. For property developers and contractors, see how much of current assets is land, unbilled work or long-dated receivables rather than cash. Also check the date of the last quarterly report. Companies get two months after each quarter to file, so the balance sheet behind the NCAV can be months old.

Wherever it is listed, a net-net is cheap for a reason. Our 10-point net-net checklist covers the questions to ask of every company.
